Problem X becomes the first ever English Street Fighter 5 EVO champion

  • Problem X defeated legendary SFV player and last year’s EVO champion, Tokido
  • He outlasted just under 2,500 of the world’s best to bring the EVO trophy home
  • UK players like Packz, Confz and Ryan Hart rushed to the stage in pure elation

Benjamin ‘Problem X’ Simon has made history as the first ever Englishman to win the Street Fighter 5 championship at EVO, the biggest fighting game event of the year. Problem X outlasted just under 2,500 of the world’s best players to cement his status amongst the elite.

The victory lead to the delight of thousands of European and UK fans who finally had a champion to call their own. Many didn’t expect Problem X to get this far but it perfectly summaries the unpredictability of this year’s tournament.

Problem X defeated last year’s champion Hajime ‘Tokido’ Taniguchi in the grand final, the Japan native was the only player in the final eight who had reached the final stages last year.

Last year, Tokido battled through the loser’s bracket to take home the trophy and nearly did the same again as he took the same route to the final. Meanwhile some elite players crashed out in the earlier stages including 2016 Capcom Cup champion Du ‘NuckleDu’ Dang who could only manage a mere 97th place finish.

Meanwhile Problem X had a difficult route himself, defeating top-caliber players such as Capcom Tour number one seed Fujimura ‘Fudoh’ Atsushi, Kanamori ‘Gachikun’ Tsunehori and Olivier ‘Luffy’ Hay.

Not only is Problem X the first player from the UK to win the Street Fighter 5 title at EVO, he’s also the first British player to win any EVO title since Ryan Hart’t Tekken 5 win 10 years ago in 2008.

Hart was there in person to witness the final as he and many other British SFV personalities including Marcus ‘Packz’ Parker, Femi ‘F-Word’ Ade and Nathanael ‘Confz’ Asubonteg rushed to the stage to lift Problem X onto their shoulders in celebration.

Problem X’s rapid rise to stardom in SFV is nothing short of phenomenal, many have doubted him but there is no disputing his quality now. The $40,000 (£31k) he’ll receive is a nice bonus but making history and forever holding this memory will be priceless.
